Exeter Canal has reopened to water users following recent water quality tests, with Exeter City Council issuing updated guidance for visitors and canal users.
While blue‑green algae is still present in the wider area, dog owners are advised to keep dogs on a lead near the river and canal and to prevent dogs from entering or drinking from the water.
Blue‑green algae (cyanobacteria) can occur in freshwater, salt water or mixed “brackish” water. In warm, calm conditions - especially where nutrient levels are high - it can multiply quickly and form visible blooms.
Most exposure causes mild symptoms, but swallowing or prolonged contact can lead to breathing problems, stomach upsets, skin irritation and, in rare cases, more serious effects such as liver damage.
Symptoms may take hours or days to appear in people or animals but typically develop within a week of exposure.
Canal users are advised to avoid direct contact with canal water and to keep dogs out of the water while blue green algae remains present in the area.
If you think you may have come into contact with water affected by an algal bloom:
- Wash exposed skin and clothing with fresh water and soap.
- Keep cool and use standard treatments (for example, calamine lotion) if itching is uncomfortable.
- Seek medical advice if you experience symptoms, and mention potential exposure to blue‑green algae.
Users are reminded that there is a no-swimming bye law in place on the canal.
